Updated: Jan 25, 2024

March 28, 1950 - August 08, 2023

GARDNER, Steven Joseph    Steven Gardner was born March 28, 1950 to Sonja and Robert Gardner in Paterson, New Jersey. He grew up in Saugerties (up-state), New York where he was involved in numerous local activities with his friends and family including Boy Scouts and many sports. Steve had a love of baseball that was legendary and was well known among family and friends. After he graduated from Saugerties High School in 1968 he attended Ulster County Community College. In 1979 he moved out west to Kremmling, Colorado where he met the love of his life, Pennie Shoemaker. After they married, they settled down and began building their family. While Steve worked for Climax Corporation at the Moly Mine, Pennie was a stay-at-home mom to their sons, Michael and Bobby. In 1982 Steve was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After nearly a year of battling cancer he went into full remission; however, he could no longer handle the cold temperature of Colorado. Soon after his battle with cancer was won he and his family moved to Texas in 1983. In Texas he was the Warehouse Supervisor for Lighthouse for the Blind where they made plastics.    Steven Gardner passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 8, 2023 after his battle with cancer. He is reunited with his family in Heaven and is no longer in pain.    Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sonja Gardner; his wife of 43 years, Pennie Gardner; and sons Michael and Robert Gardner. He is survived by his brother Allen Gardner of Spokane Valley, brother Jeffrey Gardner of Saugerties, NY, sister Barbara Carrubba of Saugerties, NY, sister Kathy Karanza of Kingston, NY, and his beloved nephew, Jeffrey Gardner of Spokane Valley. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.    A celebration of life will be held at East Valley Baptist Church in Spokane Valley, September 16, 2023, at 1:00 PM.    The family would like to thank Hospice of Spokane for their kind and attentive care.
