Rose Marie Griess, 83 of Spokane, Washington, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Rose was born August 18, 1941 in Trenton, Nebraska, to Wesley Irwin and Edna (Frakes) Fuqua. In 1959 she graduated from Lexington (Nebraska) High School. Rose was united in marriage to LaRayne Allen Griess on September 5, 1964 and moved to Sutton, NE.  To this union two children were born: Craig and Darci.  Tragedy saddened Rose’s life with the 1986 death of her son Craig (age 20) in a car accident and six months later the death of LaRayne, due to a heart attack.

Rose took an active role in farming and loved the farm but decided to sell it and move to nearby Hastings to attend Central Community College.  She earned an AA degree and then stayed on as an instructor to teach students in the Culinary Arts program.  In 1999, she retired and moved to Spokane, Washington.

Over the years, Rose had been an active church member in her communities: Zion Lutheran (Sutton), Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (Hastings) and Bethlehem Lutheran and Central Lutheran (both in Spokane).  Service to others was important to Rose and she volunteered as a driver for Spokane Care Cars, making church quilts and for many of her kids’ activities throughout their school years.  Farm issues were also important to Rose and for many years she was active in Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE).  Rose loved gardening, became a Master Gardner and volunteered at their events and Plant Clinic, earning Master Gardener Emeritus status. She loved watching Gonzaga University basketball and attending Spokane Indians baseball games. Her other hobbies included DIY projects, crafts, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.  Rose was independent, had a strong sense of spirit and loved chocolate, “regular” coffee and dogs.

She is survived by her daughter, Darci and husband Jeff Bierman of Spokane, WA; granddaughters, Jesslyn Bierman of Titusville, FL and Brenna Bierman of Madison, WI; and grandson, Clayton Bierman of Durham, NC.  Rose was preceded in death by her husband, LaRayne Griess; son, Craig John Griess; parents, Edna and Irwin Fuqua; sister, Mary Ann Schnacker; sister, Betty Wonderly; and brother, Harry Fuqua.

An Interment of Ashes service will be held this summer in Sutton, NE.  Memorials can be made in memory of Rose to Mission Community Outreach Center of Spokane or the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department.
