December 30, 1940 - August 28, 2015
Rachel battled pancreatic cancer for six months, but On August 28th, 2015 while holding hands with the love of her life Jerry she was unable to continue fighting. Rachel was born on December 30th, 1940 to Harry and Ruth Arney in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a ‘Late Christmas Present’ to her seven siblings. Many of her favorite lifetime memories blossomed from her summers at the Jersey Shore, where it’s been rumored she repeatedly absconded with her father’s prized Chis Craft boat. Shortly after graduating from Central Dauphin High School in 1958, she married a staunch Catholic, Jerry Wesley, in a small chapel wedding against her strict Presbyterian mother’s counsel. Their marriage lasted 56 years and some change till her passing, proving their vows of marriage were truly till death do they part. Though Rachel attended beauty school and became a cosmetologist, she considered herself the original ‘Domestic Engineer’ where her heart and spirit were in rearing her two children Jeff and Sharon. Her love for her children carried over to her grandchildren where she was affectionately known as Grammy. Her love was so great, she moved from her ‘mansion in Dauphin Pennsylvania’ to Spokane, Washington in 1992 to help her daughter and son-in-law, Mark, who were both serving on active duty in the USAF. Rachel was known for her smile, baked beans, Grammyisms, scrabble, friendships, casinos, RVing, fishing, cooking, open house to all and love for her family, but most of all – her wry sense of humor up till the end where she passed away on her daughter-in-law Andrea’s birthday. Rachel is survived by her husband Jerry; son Jeff (Andrea) Wesley of Chariton, Iowa; daughter Sharon (Mark) Howard of Spokane Valley, Washington; grandchildren Stacia Spencer, Steven, Justin, and Shelby Wesley, Rachel Eads, Ian and Philip Howard and her older sister Lois Rumney of San Jose, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice House of Spokane (South) in Rachel’s memory. Thank you to Dr.’s Lund, Mejia and Queen and the people at Hospice for your exceptional care and kindness. We would also like to thank the many friends who have loved and supported Rachel and our family throughout this very difficult time. A celebration of life will be held at the Howard family house on September 9th at 5:30 p.m. Community Cremation & Funeral - Spokane Valley - 13127 E.
