March 12, 1927 - December 09, 2016
McCrae, Newton J. (Age 89) - Newt was born to Henry William McCrae and Ethel Beatrice McCrae (Hill) on March 12, 1927 in Gladstone, Manitoba, Canada and passed in Spokane, WA on December 9, 2016. On July 13, 1937 at the age of ten while farming in Saskatchewan Newt and his father were cutting hay when Newt fell from the horse drawn hay mower he had been driving and lost both of his arms. After high school he went to work in the Insurance industry. On Feb. 1, 1949 he married his beautiful bride, Meryl. They had 3 children, two boys and a girl, one of them being a foster son with a similar disability. In June of 1957 they moved to Seattle, WA, where he continued in the Insurance field. He retired on September 30, 1989. Newt was truly an overcomer and never let his disability slow him down. He worked hard and played hard. Newt was an avid pool player, loved to camp and travel and in 1985 began to play golf with special equipment. This fulfilled a lifelong dream. He golfed weekly with his son-in-law and friends from his church, well into his eighties. In March of this year he lost his wife of 67 years to death. Newt was an inspiration to all that he met. He is survived by son, Charley Vanderjagt of Snohomish, WA, daughter, Debby Van Bebber (Mark) of Spokane, WA; six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are wife, Meryl, son, Cameron, two grandsons, Dalin and Joe, parents Henry and Ethel, brothers, Ken (Doreen), Francis (Cora) and sister Margaret (Wilfred). We would be honored to have you join in celebrating Newton James McCraes life on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 11 am at the Pasadena Park Nazarene Church. - Community Cremation & Funeral Spokane Valley - 13127 E.
