December 27, 1929 - April 13, 2016
Our loving husband, father, papa and friend passed away peacefully on April 13, 2016 at Sacred Heart Hospital at the age of eighty-six. Maurice Bernard Horlen was born on December 27, 1929 to Bernard and Mildred Horlen. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1947. After high school, he served in the United States Navy and later attended the University of Idaho. In 1954, he married the love of his life, Shirley Mae (Enderson) and they shared sixty-one happy years together. His career at Ideal Cement Company spanned over three decades. He enjoyed his work and made many lasting friendships along the way. He was an avid reader, an enthusiastic GU basketball fan, loved classical music, enjoyed traveling and spending time at Coeur d 'Alene Lake with family. He was a life-long exercise advocate and completed his last Bloomsday at the age of eighty! His greatest joy in life was his role as husband, father and papa. He would do anything for his family - always putting us first. His devotion and loving care of our mother on her long journey with Alzheimer's disease inspired all of us. Thanks Dad for showing us what love is and setting such a good example for your children and grandchildren. Your legacy will live on in our hearts. You will be greatly missed and forever loved. Maurie is survived by his wife Shirley of Liberty Lake; son Jeff (Jody) Horlen of Spokane, daughter Lisa (Doug) Olsen of Deer Park, daughter Julie (Jim) Psomas of Liberty Lake, sister Donna Besser of Santa Rosa, CA and five grandchildren, Stefanie (Jason) Grivois, Willie (Danielle) Horlen, Ryan Horlen, Hunter Olsen and Jimmy Psomas. He was preceded in death by his parents. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer's Association P.O. Box 96011 Washington, D.C. 20090-6011 or the Union Gospel Mission P.O. Box 4066 Spokane, Washington 99220.
