Larry Steven Stebbins passed away in the early morning of May 12, 2026. He was 86 years old. Larry was born in Eureka, California on June 8, 1939 to parents Maryellen Benson and Lawrence Stebbins.

Larry is survived by his wife of 33 years Liz Stebbins, daughter Athena Wolfe and husband Christopher Wolfe, daughter Irene Stebbins, daughter Trudy Jean Stebbins and wife Ronni Taylor, son Stephen Stebbins and partner Liv Smurkowski, grandsons Noah Wolfe, Adam Wolfe, Ethan Weiske, and granddaughter Louise Ann Stebbins.

Larry grew up in Willowcreek, California and attended Arcata High School, where he played football and took up the trombone. Thus began his lifelong love of music and sports. Upon graduation he joined the United States Air Force Band playing the trombone, when he met his first wife Joanna. They settled in New York and Larry started his lengthy 33 year career at Citibank Inc., working his way up from bank clerk to Vice President. While working full time he also attended Pace University’s M.B.A. program, and became a father to two daughters, Athena and Irene.

In 1993 Larry married the love of his life, Liz Elmore Stebbins with whom he had twins; Trudy Jean and Stephen. The family resettled in the Spokane area where Larry retired. Larry spent his days devoted to his family, traveling, and spending time with friends. He was a loyal companion, a curious observer, and a voracious reader. He also loved all sports and would often attend games of the Gonzaga University’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams.

Larry had a keen interest in the Stebbins family genealogy, even taking a bucket list trip to England and Scotland to visit ancestral sites. He was also an esteemed member of the Tsnungwe Tribe, through his maternal side. He assembled genealogies for his family lineage and documented previously unknown histories of other tribal families. His contributions to the history of the Tsnungwe people became an important part of tribal efforts toward federal recognition.

In his free time, Larry was an excellent cook and a connoisseur of wine and spirits. Most of all, Larry was passionate about fishing his entire life and he loved to share that passion with friends and family anytime and anywhere. It didn’t matter what kind of body of water; ocean, lake, river, or stream, Larry fished it all and loved every minute. Throughout his life, Larry maintained his dry sense of humor and wry observations even to his last days.

When he wasn’t fishing, Larry felt most at peace at the cabin on Flathead Lake, Montana where he would spend his days on the deck looking out at the setting sun, or boating around Wild Horse Island. Friends and family from all over gathered and there was always good food and lots of

laughter. Above all, Larry valued his family and friends and was grateful for a long, full and blessed life. He is missed by all who knew and loved him.

If you would like to make a donation in Larry’s name the family suggests Hospice of Spokane at
