Jon Merrell

Jon Merrell was a good human. Not just a good one, a GREAT one. He had a heart of gold and a smile that could (literally) stop traffic. He was a devoted dad, loving husband, fun uncle, and beloved son and brother. His immense talents ran the gamut—musician, artist, animator, home brewer, athlete, playtime action-figure storyteller, math homework helper, flattop grill master—and his curiosity for life powered it. Always down to clown, Jon would jump at the chance for community and camaraderie, whether that meant skydiving with coworkers, “Park After Dark" sledding on the first snowfall with his daughter, or collaborating on an endless number of creative pursuits with his wife and many friends.
Born in Yakima, WA, he started the Men’s Swim Team at West Valley High School with a handful of friends, taught numerous kiddos to love the water as a swim instructor at the Yakima Tennis Club, and was a staple amongst friends for xbox hang outs and jam sessions.
He attended Whitworth University, where he met his wife and co-conspirator, Lindsey. After graduating with a BA in Art (Printmaking and Graphic Design), he went on to a long and award-filled career in commercial art, ending with his dream job as an animator and motion graphics designer. On top of his 9-5, Jon had a notable fine arts career. Some of his favorite times were spent in the studio with his wife, Lindsey, making things and being silly. His artwork partnered him with many talented Spokane poets, writers, musicians, and artists over the years as well; a process he always loved and looked forward to.
Despite a devastating ALS diagnosis, Jon never lost his optimism or epic sense of humor, nor his capacity to love. He will always be remembered for his kindness and his killer dance moves.
Jon is survived by his parents, Ray and Eileen Merrell of Yakima, brothers Greg (Charlotte) and Justin Merrell, nieces Gretchen and Rosa, and the loves of his life, wife Lindsey and daughter Ellie. He will be missed by multitudes.
The family wishes to thank everyone who surrounded Jon, Lindsey, and Ellie with so much love and support towards the end of his life, with special shoutouts to the fine ALS team at St Luke’s, caregivers Chris, Davila, and Justin, and Denise Burningham. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you hug someone you love, dance at every opportunity, and do the fun thing you’ve been putting off.
We love you, Jon Merrell. See you on the other side.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, October 24 at 11am. 316 E 24th Ave, Spokane, WA 99203.
An additional gathering will be held in Yakima on November 1, from 4-6pm, at the Yakima Country Club. 500 Country Club Dr, Yakima, WA 98901.
