Hobart was the eldest of 2 brothers. He graduated from Gresham High School Class of 1948. Raised in the Gresham/Centennial area during his childhood, he moved many times throughout his grade school years because his parents owned small corner grocery stores. After school he joined the ranks of the US Army. He enlisted on October 23, 1950 and served for 3 years, Honorably Discharged on November 3, 1953. He served in the Korean War as a member of the 3rd Platoon, Heavy Mortar Company, 180th Infantry. Between fishing trips they had 3 children - Mike, Misty and Mel. “Hobie” had numerous jobs in life but, none more rewarding than in retirement, landing the job of his dreams. It involved fishing and cooking as the Outback Angler for Subaru, as well as doing a local radio program and TV shows for Public Television about freshwater fishing in the Pacific Northwest. It involved traveling with his wife and showing off his cooking skills at the O’Laughlin Sportsmen’s Shows. He had very diverse interests, and once he decided to do something, he gave it his all. While in the service he was a part of the Company basketball team, he was a member of a National Championship Marksmanship team, later in life he bowled a certified perfect game. Hobie was a well respected resource in the fishing and hunting community, taking camp cooking to a new level and becoming an expert in antique fishing tackle. He was a proud and vocal member of the Oregon Bass & Panfish Club, as well as being inducted into the Northwest Steelheaders Hall of Fame. In 2014 he and Meiri left Portland, moving to Spokane, WA to be closer to their daughter to assist with his wife’s health and medical needs. Upon Meiri’s passing Hobart decided to remain in his Spokane apartment to continue his independence and stay close to his VA care.
