He received his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1962 and subsequently went on to becoming a high school social studies and math teacher in both Torrence, California and Maine-Endwell, New York. Edward then decided to further his education at the University of Northern Colorado where he received his MA in 1971 and ED in 1975. He remained at the university as an Assistant Professor of Education after his graduation. Edward’s next move was to Dillon, Montana to assume the role of Assistant Professor of Education where he also met his future wife, Ethel Whitmer. Edward and Ethel married on July 30, 1977 and remained married until his death.
Edward transitioned to the roles of Principal and Superintendent of Schools in Plummer, Idaho and would hold the position of Superintendent of Schools at five different towns spanning Idaho, New York, and Washington states. After spending 46 years as a teacher and administrator, he retired in 2009 from the Coulee-Hartline School District in central Washington. During his term as superintendent there, he led the district through the process of planning and building a new high school.
Prior to retirement, he devoted most of his spare time to his profession and his family. He loved to take family trips with his wife and daughters during school vacations.
When he retired, he enjoyed playing golf and he served as the secretary for the Over the Hill Gang Golf Club in Liberty Lake. He also read, “worked” on his computer and enjoyed time with his family. He spent several winters in Sun City West, Arizona. Several times during the winter months he took short trips to Florida where he visited friends and family and played a little golf.
During retirement, he also spent time as a Diversion Volunteer for the Spokane Juvenile Courts, became certified as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and volunteered as a reading buddy for the Spokane Public Library.
