Reverend Douglas Robert Scherschel, known to most as Doug or Pastor, entered eternal life on Saturday, September 7th, 2013, at the age of 59 after a short and aggressive battle with cancer. Douglas was born October 10, 1953, to Robert and Betty Jane (nee Stein) Scherschel, in Milwaukee, WI, the youngest of their four children. He became a child of God at his baptism at Atonement Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI, on November 22, 1953. and his faith was reaffirmed at his confirmation on April 30, 1967 also at Atonement Lutheran Church. He attended Atonement Lutheran School and graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran High School in 1971. Doug felt called to serve the Lord early in life. After graduating from Northwestern College in 1975, he attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary for his formal ministry training. During his years at Northwest, Doug met Louise Ungrodt, a student at the Milwaukee School of Nursing. They were married on June 26, 1976, in Rhinelander, WI, and remained faithful to each other for 37 years until his death. Upon his graduation from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in 1979, Doug received a call to serve St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Spokane, WA, where he spent the remainder of his life working as a tireless servant to the congregation. During his years as pastor of St. Matthew, Doug was honored to minister alongside many other faithful believers in sharing Godâ??s love. He also led other pastors in the Northwest region in terms as their circuit Pastor, through serving on their Mission Board, and filling vacancies for Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Pullman, WA. He was known for his generous heart, sense of humor, and willingness to offer thoughtful advice. Douglas is survived by his wife, Louise, and their four children, Marc (Rae) Scherschel of Appleton, WI; Laura (Matthew) Maier of Seattle, WA; Luke (Rachel) Scherschel of Toledo, OH; and Timothy (Chelsea) Scherschel of Monroe, WA; as well as his four grandchildren, Alex, Anya, David, and Emeline. Doug is also mourned by his sisters, Karen Davis, Sandra (John) Vogt, and a brother, William (Carol) Scherschel, and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents in-law, and three brothers-in-law. A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 16, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 6905 N. Country Homes Blvd, Spokane, WA 99208. A visitation will precede the service starting at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Matthew Lutheran Church toward new front doors for the church.
