November 21, 1924 - August 02, 2014

Dorothy Jan Millard passed away on August 2, 2014 in Spokane, WA. Dorothy was born on November 21, 1924 at Deaconess Hospital in Wenatchee, WA to Ray Levi and Matilda (Kellogg) Hughes. She attended East Wenatchee Grade School and Beaver Creek Grade School in Carlton, WA. She also attended Twisp High School and graduated from William Winlock-Miller High School in Olympia, WA in June of 1942. Dorothy graduated from Spokane Community College in 1968 after 2 years of study in Data Processing. Throughout her life she worked many jobs, including photographic film developing with her Aunt Loma Hughes during high school; working for Madigan General Hospital in Fort Lewis, WA as a bookkeeper for Col. McElvany in the medical supplies department; also working for Sampson Ayers House of Music in Spokane and the Evangel Bible Book Store in Spokane before she retired in 1994. She married Robert Kenneth Millard on December 2, 1942 in Olympia, WA by a Justice of the Peace. After her divorce from Robert in 1967, her connection to the local area led her to live with her daughter in NE Spokane, WA for a short time. Dorothy has always loved to grow a whole yard full of flowers and a huge garden that she generously shared with all her friends, neighbors and kids, while providing her with lots of enjoyment in doing so. She was always handing plants over the fence and wheel-barrowing a load of her special fertilizer mixture to them as well. She frequently cooked something she would share with the neighbors. When they would help her by shoveling snow from the walks, plowing it from the alley, or mowing her lawn; she would reward and thank them with her awesome vegetables from her garden, homemade cinnamon rolls, cakes, pies or desserts. Dorothy was a member of the Twisp Baptist Church, Hillyard Baptist Church, 4th Memorial Church, and Spokane Chapter of Ponderosa Republican Women. She is survived by her daughter Barbara R. Harke of Allyn, WA; son Richard D. Millard of Williams, AZ; daughter Shannon R. Town of Cheney, WA; daughter Darin M. Irish of Colbert, WA; and her brother Robert C. Hughes of Olympia, WA; as well as 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
