February 02, 1922 - May 24, 2016
PEUCK (Pike), Doris P, Nee Kraus (age 94) Doris Pauline Peuck was born on February 2, 1922 in Spokane, WA, and passed away on May 24, 2016. The family of Paul Kraus, father, left Bavaria for Russia and from there immigrated into the United States, in the 1910's. Paul Kraus met and married Blanch Gumm,of Athol and Rathdrum, ID, together they had five children, Doris and her twin sister Dorothy were 3rd and 4th in line. All the children were removed from the family home when Doris was just 2 years old. She grew up in Washington State Orphanage and Foster Care System. Doris attended many schools in Spokane but Lewis & Clark High School was her favorite. Where in high school, she placed first in a city-wide typing competition, using the old-style manual typewriter. She learned to swim at the downtown “Y” and became a champion swimmer and diver with lifeguard accreditation. Doris and Howard met in 1941 and were married in November of that year. They lived on the family farm at Newman Lake before moving, with three children, to their present home in Otis Orchards in 1946. Doris attended Spokane Community College and received her certificate as an accredited Medical Record Technician. She worked in the medical field and as Secretary of downtown Rotary Club 21, before retiring in 1987. She was an Honorary Member of Rotary 21 Club, American Association of Medical Record Librarians. For her many years service and caring, Rotary 21 gifted Doris with a trip to Britain and Northern Europe, for both her and Howard. Their first stop was London. While having their first tea, in an English tea-house, Doris very much admired the teapot. On their way out the door, the waitress discreetly handed Howard a paper sack; inside was the teapot. Howard had to lug that "damn teapot" all over Britain, Germany and back to the U.S and Otis, where it sits in the cupboard today. A deeply felt responsibility to help others motivated Doris her entire life. Her husbands’ parents, Fred and Grace Peuck (Pike) built their home in part of her vegetable garden and Doris helped care for them in their final years. She chauffered Grandpa and Grandma all over town, he in his suit and fedora hat, she in her good dress with matching apron. In their senior years, she and Howard brought her older sister, Helen, from Alaska and her twin sister, Dorothy, from Reno, into their home and cared for them until their passing. On the Otis Farm, she and her family raised chickens, rabbits, sheep, cows and many dogs and cats. She was often seen working in her beloved flower and vegetable gardens. Her flowers were especially favored by her and all who passed her home. Doris is survived by her husband Howard; daughter, Lue Rae Guardipee; grandson, Ron Guardipee; granddaughters, Shawn Guardipee, Tracey Pike Morris, and Dena Pike; grandsons, Todd Pike and Jeff Pike. She is preceded in death by a daughter, in 1947; and two sons Fred Pike and Sidney Pike.
