March 30, 1932 - May 27, 2017
"Mac" (Age 85) - In the hearts and thoughts of many, Mac passed away on May 27th, 2017. He was born March 30, 1932 to Leo and Agnes (Donna) McGowan. He grew up in and around International Falls, MN. His adventurous spirit journeyed with him on his relocation to Spokane with his family in the mid 1950s. Mac joined the Army and fought during the Korean War, returning to Spokane to open a service station with brother Bob, later taking the civil service test to become a firefighter. He began work with the Spokane Fire Department, retiring his helmet after 30 years of dedicated service. He loved his firefighter brothers and considered himself lucky to have a job that he truly enjoyed! - He married Marilyn Matteson and together they had two daughters, Kelley and Tammy. He later married the love of his life, Jane (Love). Mac considered himself fortunate to gain two additional children, Scott and Melissa. Mac and Jane enjoyed many years with family and friends. Together they traveled, skied, snowmobiled and played hundreds of rounds of golf, making friends too numerous to count. Eventually they began annually traveling to and from their home in Thousand Palms, CA. Their tight-knit community of former firefighters and family shared daily adventures and shenanigans! - He is preceded in death by his wife Jane, and older brother, Gerald. Mac is survived by his eldest brother, Robert, sister (Gulieanne). He also leaves behind his children; Kelley, Tammy (Barry), Scott (Victoria), Melissa (Mike), multiple grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. - Family wishes to thank all who cared so deeply for Mac during his final years, especially those at Rockwood Hawthorne. Their love and exceptional care has been so appreciated! - Mac never knew a stranger. He welcomed and included all. He laughed, joked and wholly enjoyed his God given life! He was a sports fanatic (loved GU), but will mainly be remembered for his kindness, humility, and ability to laugh with anyone. A celebration of his life and spirit will take place at Spokane Memorial Gardens on Saturday, June 10th at 4 p.m. A reception will follow at the Hampton Inn.
