Beverly Jeane Swanson nee Thaut was born September 17, 1930 in Ritzville, Washington.  She spent her early childhood in the little railroad town of Maringo, Washington.  When the family moved to Spokane, Bev (never Beverly) was between grades and had to choose to go forward or back.  As always, she chose Forward!  When the family moved to St. Maries, Idaho, she chose to live with her Aunt Bessie and finish attending North Central High School.  Bev graduated at 16 years old.  She dreamed of becoming a doctor but was able to attend Sacred Heart Nursing School and become a Registered Nurse.

She met her future husband while attending nursing school.  They married and he entered the service.  She worked in a hospital in Monterrey, California while he was stationed at Ft. Ord.  When they returned to Spokane, Bev went to work at Sacred Heart Hospital while her husband attended law school.  After the birth of her second child, she quit work but kept active with her Guild work with what eventually became ARC.

Bev returned to work in 1970 at Holy Family Hospital, at first part time as the Relief Night Supervisor and eventually full time working in Utilization Review where she stayed until she retired.  After retirement, she went on a whirlwind 5-week tour of Europe making lifelong friends along the way.

Bev put in a pool in her backyard and was so busy entertaining she didn’t know how she had ever had time to work!  She loved to bake Christmas cookies for the freezer while watching football games on her kitchen TV.  Bev took quilting classes and we all benefited with our new quilted bedspreads.  She took cake decorating, flower arranging, and learned to make jointed stuffed animals.  Someone gave Bev an old mink stole, and we all received mink teddy bears!

She spent her last years at Good Samaritan Nursing Home and it was gratifying to talk to the many people working there who had known her.  Many had trained under her or had worked with her previously.

Bev was predeceased by her parents, Harold Thaut and Lucille Gardiner, and her son, Douglas Swanson.  She also outlived her brothers, Harold (Bud) Thaut, Stanley Loren Thaut, Daryl Leonard Thaut, and James Gardiner.  She is survived by her daughter, Christy Swanson, and her sons, Eric Swanson (Kathleen and sons: Evan and William), and Donald Swanson, and her grandsons Parker Swanson and Jake Swanson.
