Obituary for Virginia Frazier Duzan
Virginia Duzan, a 53 year resident of Oak Harbor, died at the age of 90 in Spokane on Sunday, May 6. She had recently moved to Spokane in August to be closer to her daughter. Virginia was born on December 29, 1927 in Drexel, Missouri to Robert Dean and Ethel Lee Frazier. Her family had a dairy farm and showed prize mules. The eldest grandchild of Ed and Cecilia Virginia Frazier, Virginia was the apple of her grandfather’s eye and always accompanied him in the wagon when he showed his mule team.
Virginia was a sophomore at Drexel High School when a shy new senior, Bill Duzan, enrolled. This was the beginning of a 63 year romance. After graduation from high school, Virginia attended Pittsburgh State Teachers College in Pittsburgh, Kansas. On September 4, 1946, Bill and Virginia were united in marriage. In 1948, their daughter Dana Lee was born and in 1949, their son Robert Ray was born. After 5 years in the civilian world, Bill reenlisted in the Navy. Virginia was a very proud military wife and loved the travel and meeting new friends. Duty assignments included Great Lakes, Illinois; Olathe, Kansas; Agana, Guam; Millington, Tennessee; Whidbey Island, Washington; Kingsville, Texas; Barbers Point, Hawaii; and back to Whidbey Island, Washington where Bill retired and Virginia lived until her move to Spokane last fall.
Throughout the many moves, Virginia worked first for the American Red Cross and then began her career in Civil Service in 1953. She retired from her Civil Service career at the NAS Whidbey Island Disbursing Department in 1991, after 38 years of service.
After retirement from Civil Service, Virginia helped with the Christmas’ Silver Lake Tree Farm. She loved the holidays, decorating the house and beautiful packages. Retirement also included travel, entertaining, and watching sunrises and sunsets from the dream home she and Bill lived in at Davis Landing.
Virginia is survived by her daughter Dana Duzan of Spokane, son Robert Duzan and wife Jill of Scottsdale, AZ; granddaughter Dena Sokoll and husband Walter of West Chester, PA; and great grandchildren Nicholas and Grace Sokoll of West Chester, PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) in 2008, her parents and 6 aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be at Davis Landing on Tuesday, May 15, at 2pm with Linda Hadden as the Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Virginia may be sent to US Navy Memorial at www.navymemorial.org or 701 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC 20004.
