a life-long resident of Mead, WA, died unexpectedly on January 20, 2015, at the age of 65. Con was born in Colville, WA on May 17, 1949 to Barbara Merkel-Hillhouse and Victor Merkel. He attended Mead High School and before graduating he joined the US Marine Corp in June of 1967. He served one year with distinction as a Marine in Vietnam, returning home to his family in January 1969. He was employed by Kaiser Mead for over 20 years and worked for the past ten years with the Spokane Transit Authority as a bus driver. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting with family and friends, he also loved riding his Harley, spending fun filled time with his grandchildren and watching movies on his days off. Con is survived by his daughter, Coni (Dwayne) Wilson; his sons, Levi Merkel and Luke Merkel; his brothers, Bob Merkel (LeAnn), Gary Merkel (Jean); his grandchildren, Madalin, Destine, Jaxton; niece and nephews; Amber, Aaron, Matt, and John. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara Hillhouse and Victor Merkel; and his brother Guy Merkel. A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.
