Obituary for G. Janet McLain
Glenda Janet “Jan” (Eppley) McLain passed away on January 20th, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. She was born October 23rd, 1940 to Ida Mae & Glen Eppley in Everett WA. She was the youngest of three, sister to older brothers Eldon Dean “Dean” and Richard. In 1945, the family moved from Everett to Spokane where Jan went to Willard Elementary and then graduated from North Central High School as a member of the Red Feathers (1958). While attending Washington State College, she pledged Alpha Delta Pi. On October 17th, 1959, Jan married her love Bruce Wayne McLain. Together they had three children: Rebecca, Christopher, and Melissa. Eventually, Bruce and Jan settled their family in Colville.
Jan was a voracious reader; loving books of all genres but especially cozy mysteries featuring cats. She loved to learn and was a genealogy buff. She was a collector of Graniteware and could be frequently found at swap meets and antique shops alike. Jan loved to participate in groups, singing with The Sweet Adelines and leading Weight Watchers meetings. She was an avid crafter, being skilled in quilting, sewing and tole painting. She was an ardent champion of animals, in recent years donating her time and home to fostering rescue cats (many of whom came to find their home with her permanently). A few years ago, Jan and her daughter Melissa took a long dreamed of Alaskan Cruise on the ship Pacific Catalyst, which Jan considered the Adventure of a Lifetime. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Eldon Dean, and her husband Bruce. She is survived by her older brother Richard (Jean) Eppley; children Rebecca (Bruce) Chesterman, Christopher (Robin) McLain, and Melissa McLain; grandchildren Cassandra (Tyler Saathoff) McLain, Miranda Chesterman, and Megan (Scott) Gyllstrom; and her great grandson Henry. She also is survived by her niece Zoe Eppley, and nephews Dean Eppley, Joel McLain, and Jon McLain. In lieu of flowers, her family would ask instead for donations to Hospice of Spokane or the animal rescue of your choosing. A graveside memorial service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 4:00 pm, followed by a reception at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 508 N. Government Way.
