Richard Vernon Evenson was born to Leland and Lenore Evenson on May 19, 1952 in Hlabisa, Zululand, South Africa. Rickâ??s parents were serving as Lutheran missionaries in South Africa at the time. Rick lived there until age 13 with his family and missionary friends (whom he thought of as his extended family). Some of his first words were in Zulu and was able to speak it still when he and his wife, Kathi, traveled back to South Africa. Rick lived in Minnesota upon returning to the USA. After high school he attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle and then attended the University of Minnesota where he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Rick is a graduate of Northwest College and received his Masters of Divinity from Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, MN. Rick was an Ordained Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, serving congregations in Idaho, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington. Rick was a devoted and loving father, husband and pastor. He enjoyed working on his Volvos, carpentry and fixing about anything. Rick had a beautiful voice, enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. Rick had a passion for fishing, enjoyed camping with friends and family, and gardening. Rick is survived by his wife, Kathi; his sons, Thomas (Amber) and Luke; daughter, Emily; step-son, Brendan; and dog, Pudge. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Werley (David); and brothers, Mark (Linda) and Rolf; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Rick will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, many of whom spent time loving and supporting Rick in these last weeks before his death. Services will be held Monday, June 16, 2014, at 2:00 PM, at Saint John Lutheran Church in Medical Lake. Donations can be made in his memory to Lutheran World Relief (lwr.org).
