Obituary for Ronald Francis Messenger

Ron passed away October 31, 2021 at his home in Spokane Valley with family by his side. He had battled dementia for many years, along with diabetes and other health issues. Ron was born in Pomeroy, WA on February 15, 1933 to Glen and Eva Messenger. He graduated from PHS in 1951, and was drafted into the US Army soon after. He served in Korea and was discharged two years later with the rank of SGT. Upon his return to Pomeroy, he and Gretchen were married. They moved to Cheney where Ron was enrolled at EWU. After completion of his AA degree, the family moved to San Francisco where Ron was enrolled in the SF College of Mortuary Science. He graduated with honors in June of 1959 and the family moved to Spokane where he had accepted employment with Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.
Ten years later he bought into a partnership at the Smith Funeral Home in Spokane. The business was sold in 1979 and Ron took on the role of house husband. Upon Gretchen's retirement they began spending winters in Yuma, AZ, ending in 2017 after 18 years.
Ron is survived by his wife; son Ron (Christine) at the family home, Heidi of Spokane Valley and Don of Otis Orchards. Also, five grandchildren, Jeni, Brandon, Cory, Bryce and Jamie; and four great grandchildren, Mikalah, Ava, Skyler Jo, and Everleigh. Ron was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Robin.
