May 16, 1962 - August 19, 2017
Margie Stevens passed away peacefully on August 19, 2017 in Spokane with family at her side. Margie was born May 16, 1962 in Spokane to Norman and Elizabeth Barnhart. She grew up in the west valley area with a childhood that included camping, motorbike riding, skateboarding, gymnastics and high school debate. Margie enjoyed playing hand bells, especially the last five years. She liked travel, sporting events, whitewater rafting and the beach. Favorite activities included kayaking and Vespa rides and she loved her dogs. She graduated from West Valley High School in 1980 and Eastern Washington University (accounting) in 1997. Margie worked in credit unions in Great Falls, MT, and Spokane, at Pegasus Gold for thirteen years, and in finance at Avista starting in 2001 where she also met her husband, Rich. Margie married Tom Bjornberg in 1981 and they had a son, Brent, but later divorced. She married Rich Stevens in 2005 and they made their home most recently on the prairie viewing Mt Spokane. Their home became a welcome refuge as Margie battled cancer in 2013 and again starting in mid-2016. Margie developed many lasting friendships and was close to family. She is survived by her husband, her son Brent Bjornberg and stepsons Randy, Grant and Bart (wife Caitlin) Stevens. She will be missed greatly by her parents and her sister Carolyn (Steve) Chandler and their grown children Michelle (Brian) Engelhardt and Peter Chandler. She is also survived by several cousins, parents in-law Otto & Shirley Stevens, sisters in-law Diane (Mark) Paxton and Kristi (Rob Rice), and brothers in-law Brian (Denise) Stevens and Scott (Suzi) Stevens. Margie was and the family is grateful for the warmth and professional care of the Cancer Care Northwest staff and the many other medical people involved over the last four years. A memorial service will be held on August 31 at 1:00 at Colbert Presbyterian Church, 4211 E. Colbert Road, Colbert, WA. If you wish to make a memorial gift, Margie held high regard for cancer research funded through organizations such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (see BCRF.org). Margie also encouraged donations to the blood bank.
