Obituary for Louise Smith Mariani
Louise Smith Mariani passed away on September 30th in her home, under the loving care of her husband Joe and sister-in-law Patty Miller. She was born July 29, 1950 in Silver Spring, Maryland to Homer and Mildred Smith. Louise graduated in 1972 from the University of Colorado in Boulder, with a degree in Physical Therapy. She worked in the field for 40 years, first at Boulder Memorial Hospital, and later in Spokane at St. Lukes Rehab at Sacred Heart Hospital, and the Spokane Visiting Nurse Association. A warm and loving person, Louise treated her patients with skill and compassion. Through her work and devotion to family and friends, her kindness touched the lives of many. Louise loved Spokane, where she lived most of her adult life. She drew strength from nature, gardening, hiking and the mountains. She spent many summers with friends and family at her happy place, The Cabin outside Glacier National Park. Louise is survived by her husband of 35 years, Joseph Mariani, beloved son Nicolas, siblings Barbara (Dean) Presnall, David (Valerie) Smith, Robert (Cathy) Smith and Nancy (Rick) Grinberg, sister-in-law Patty Miller, Terry and John Peters, loving nieces and nephews, and a multitude of treasured friends. The family sincerely thanks Hospice of Spokane for their exceptional care, respect and kindness. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent in Louises memory to Doctors Without Borders (doctorswithoutborders.org; 212-679-6800) or to the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity (habitat-spokane.org; 509-534-2552).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 7th from 2-4 PM at Europa-Spokane, 125 S Wall St, Spokane, WA 99201.
