Obituary for Karen Joann Ellsworth

Karen Joann Ellsworth passed away peacefully with her sisters by her side, holding her hands, and loving her into her peace on September 3, 2023.

Karen’s passing is mourned by her sisters, Lisa Ellsworth and Jennifer Barnard, her father George Ellsworth (Jane), mother Joetta Rowe, nephews, one niece, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, a newly-discovered sister, and her beloved pets.

Karen had a deep adoration of animals and her home was full of them. She rescued all of them and a few were simply foster fails. She intended to get them out of shelters and into furever homes, but kept them once they stole her heart. She loved her little fur family very much.

Karen also loved crafts, baking from scratch, plants (oh, the plants!), sewing, and knitting. She spun and dyed her own yarn. She crafted beautiful creations with her expertise in all things crafty. She liked to gift her projects to those she loved and those gifts are cherished by the recipients. Karen enjoyed sourdough bread made in her own kitchen from a starter named Carl that is over 150 years old. She had a vast knowledge of plants and how to care for them. Her home was filled to bursting with plants and she was proud of the way she was able to care for them.

Karen grew up in Indiana. She was highly intelligent and worked hard to do well in school. She headed off to Alaska to study at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After years of moving around and traveling often for work, she settled in Spokane, WA. She bought a cute little home and filled it with love and critters. She worked from home as a medical coder, a job she enjoyed. She loved the freedom it gave her to be in her own space.

Karen exuded light and love. Her smile was radiant and her giggle was the cutest. She was kind and soft to everyone. Her compassion was unmatched. She was just a little spicy sometimes, but it was always justified and proportionate to the wrong she had witnessed. Her heart and soul remain a vibrant influence to those left here to live on without her.

A memorial service will be held in Indiana at a later date.
