Obituary for Jerome Milton Long
Jerome (Jerry) Milton Long, 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother passed away on August 9, 2017, in Spokane, WA. He was born in Kuna, ID on February 19, 1930, fifth child of six born to Milton and Gladys (Millspaugh) Long.
He spent his early years, and attended grade school at McGregor and Old Meadows, ID. The family moved to WA, where he attended high school at Rochester High School, graduating in 1948. After graduating, he joined the Army Air Corps (now Air Force) where he spent time in England and the U.S., working on diesel machinery. After being discharged he graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He worked as an electrician for Diamond Fruit Growers in Hood River, OR for several years. This is where he met and later married Brita Elizabeth Currier on December 17, 1955. Five daughters were born to their union, four of whom lived to adulthood. He was able to fulfill his lifelong dream as a farmer, owning farms in The Dalles, OR and in Cusick, WA, north of Spokane. He eventually finished his working career as an electrical contractor in the Cusick, Kettle Falls, and Spokane areas. He and Brita enjoyed living beside the beautiful Pend Oreille River for more than 25 years. He has lived the last few years in Spokane.
Jerry loved everything about the outdoors and enjoyed the mountains, hiking and hunting with his brother. He was very good at everything he set his mind to, from farming, remodeling houses, repairing cars or doing various woodworking projects. He was modest and quiet in nature, but had a great sense of humor. He charmed everyone with his ready smile! Though living for more than 20 years with Parkinson's Disease, he maintained an active lifestyle and persevered with a determination and quiet dignity that everyone who knew him admired.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Brita Long; daughter, Christi Jo Long; grandchildren, Amie Corona and Aaron Corona; his father and mother, and three sisters; Betty Brumback, Bobbie Brandfas and Molly McDowell.
Survivors include a sister, Selma Pittendrigh of Montecito, CA; brother, John R. Long (Sara) of Milwaukie OR; four daughters: Brenda Corona (Daniel) of St. Louis, MO; Debra Ihrke (Bob) of Moro, OR; Vikki Holman (Rik) of Cedar Crest, NM; and Tere Clark (Warren) of Spokane, WA; grandchildren: Mathew, Caitlin and Dominique Corona, Karl Ihrke (Shara), Kyle Ihrke (Kayla), Christi Trail (Collin), Sid Holman (Rachael), Allison Holman (Sean), Hannah Franks (Andrew), Jason and Mackenzie Clark; great-grandchildren: Trey Corona, Ivy Holman, Dorian Holman, Donovan Ihrke, Cooper Ihrke, Daniel Corona, Simon Trail and Sadie Ihrke; and many nieces and nephews.
