Obituary for Gloria Jean Hughes
Gloria Jean Hughes, loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed peacefully at home on Friday, July 2nd, 2021, after losing her hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Selma, California on May 10, 1944, the third child of Michael and Dorothy Mae (Sparks) Licon, Gloria spent her early years in the San Joaquin Valley attending school in the Fresno school district. It is here where she became the baton majorette for Andrew Hill High School and marched in the 1962 Rose Bowl parade. She later would learn her future husband, Larry, also marched in the same parade with the Marine Corp Band. They eventually would meet in March of 1963 and within weeks knew they were meant to spend their lives together. A short time later, on July 6, 1963, they were married. Larry & Gloria would have three children in California before moving to Spokane in the winter of 1973. They spent the next decade very involved with quarter horses as their children participated in horse shows throughout the Northwest, along the way, making friendships that would last a lifetime. Later, Gloria found her passion for sewing and quilting. Over the next 30 years, she made quilts for her family and friends. Gloria was at her happiest when surrounded by her family. She loved her role as Grandmother and enjoyed having the children at her home as often as possible. She was equally as joyed when she added the role of Great Grandmother. Gloria was an exceptionally generous and caring person who was always ready to lend her hand or heart to those in need. She was an angel here on earth and will forever be missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 58 years, Larry Hughes; son Darren Hughes and wife Wendy; daughter Denelle Geibel and husband Ken; son Devin Hughes and wife Natalie; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brothers Daniel Licon and Michael Licon; sister Vera Meadows.
