Obituary for Gay "Del" Dellas Laird

Gay “Del” Dellas Laird was born on December 11th, 1943 to Frank Laird and Ethel (McCray) Flach and was raised by Ralph Flach; he was the last civilian born at Hanford Nuclear Site. Del passed away October 21, 2015 in Spokane, WA. He was raised in Eastern Oregon and in the Spokane area as well. He was a proud Military Veteran of the US Air Force and the US Navy. Del retired off of the Mayflower II in Boston, MA in 1986. He was an active Girl Scout adult in the Mid-Columbia Girl Scouts. He was the founder of the US Navy Colour Guard at the Spokane Naval Reserve Center as well as the founder of the US Naval Sea Cadets Corps Columbia Basin Division in Pasco, WA. Del was a devoted husband, father, and to many family and friends. Known as “Gopaw” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren because he was “always on the go”. He was eager to travel, yard sale, shop and share those adventures with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. No matter where we were, he always found someone he knew or made new friends to talk to. He was our King of Yard Sales and Outdoor Holiday Decorations.

Del is survived by wife Helen E. Laird; daughters Coleen E. Hehl and Theresa D Laird; grandchildren: Dellas Ward of Tri-Cities, Maria Thomas, Ebony Blakemoore, Rachaelynn Ward, Steven DeStefano, and Layla McClarty, all of Spokane; great-grandchildren: Luna Ward and Zelda Yantzie, also of Spokane; as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and family.

Services will be Sunday, November 1st with a viewing at noon, the service at 1pm, both at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum, and then graveside services to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to: SeaBee Veterans of America Island 6 PO Box 5351 Spokane, WA 99205, or your favorite Veterans Group.
