He spent his early years in Oshkosh, WI and served his country during World War II from 1941 through 1945 reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Fred loved flying, cutting wood and telling stories- being very good at telling jokes and trying to pull something over on someone. Fred also loved driving back to Oshkosh every year to see his family.
Fred and Dorothy owned Gafner's Caf for many years in downtown Spokane. After selling the restaurant, he worked for twenty years at Loomis Armored Car Service as a driver. Fred is survived by three sisters; Helen Lord Burr, Florence Dickey and Ruth Denow, all of Oshkosh, WI. He is also survived by one brother, Arnold Gafner in Mesa, AZ, as well as many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by brothers Jacob Gafner, Walter Gafner and sister Marie Kemmel. He had many special friends in Spokane including Mike and Sheri Taylor, the staff and residents of Harvard Park, the employees at Numerica Credit Union and the employees of Rosauers on 29th. At his request, no memorial service will be held. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
