Allen H. Kernkamp

April 28, 1923 - October 24, 2016

Allen was born on the family farm in Plaza, WA on April 28, 1923, the third child of Edward and Martha (Hofmann) Kernkamp. He passed away on October 24, 2016 at home in Spokane Valley, WA. He attended the two-room schoolhouse in Plaza through the eighth grade and was a graduate of Rosalia High school, class of 41. In his early years, Allen faithfully attended Rosalia Methodist Church. It was there where he met the love of his life, Laura Hoff, while singing in the church choir. They were married on October 20, 1945 and celebrated 71 years of marriage. Allen farmed the home place until 1983 and semi-retiring to 7 acres in Spangle, WA. Unable to give up his love for farming, Allen worked for Keith Schafer in Odessa, WA until age 85. In 2014, Allen and Laura moved to Spokane, being blessed with many new friendships. Allen will lovingly be remembered by his wife Laura, son Eddie Kernkamp (Melodi), daughter Kaye (Missy) Merkel (John), and grandchildren Jay Kernkamp (Michele), Joe Kernkamp (Holly), Emilie McGlocklin (Colin), Evan and Jonathan Merkel, and 6 great-grandchildren. A determined man with a kind, gentle heart, Allen was proud of his German heritage and life as a farmer. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and Horizon Hospice for their understanding, loving care. Memorial contributions can be made to Union Gospel Mission or Meals on Wheels. A memorial service followed by an open house will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 2 pm at Appleway Court Apartments at 221 S Farr Rd, Spokane Valley, WA in the Community Room. - Community Cremation & Funeral Spokane Valley - 13127 E.
